Karen Burniston Designer Challenge - What's in a Name #2

Hi all! Today I'm sharing my second card for Karen Burniston's Designer Challenge. As I mentioned yesterday, the team was asked to choose two or more dies that matched their initials. For today's card, I chose the Spiral Circle Pull Card die, and the Happy Birthday Pop Up die. Since Independence Day in the US is just a couple weeks away, I decided to make a 4th of July card.

I have been dying to make a shaker card with one of Karen's dies, and this was the perfect opportunity! The card was cut from cream cardstock and stamped with stamps from Tim Holtz. Next, I used the same die and cut the circle section of the card from red Kraft Core'dinations, nestling the star inside to create a window. I cut the red circle out, added acetate to the back, and mounted it to the card center, adding the Shimmer Sheetz die cut stars before I adhered it.

After cutting the star for the shaker window, I realized I could use it for the inside of the card! I love the dimension of it. Under the star, I added a burlap circle cut with the card die, then trimmed to fit, plus a circle of blue paper that was cut with the coordinating circle die included in the Spiral Circle set.

To finish the card, I cut a piece of burlap paper with one of the tag dies from Karen's Tags Pivot set and added the 'Happy',  4, and 'th' which were cut from the Happy Birthday set and the ECD Number set.

I absolutely love this card in action! For even more movement, you could use the spiral die that's included in the set to add more stars - I wish I'd done that now! :)

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge - What's in a Name?

Hi all! Today I'm sharing a card I made for this month's Karen Burniston Designer Challenge. The June theme is 'What's in a Name?' Each of the designers had to create a card using at least two dies that matched their initials. Fun! I chose to use the All Seasons Tree and House Pivot Card dies.

While playing with the House Pivot Card die last year, trying to make the house 3D, I happened upon another way to use it. By chopping off the roof and adding a back and feet, I could turn it into a little planter box! Graphic 45's Botanical Tea paper was perfect for filling it up.

Here's a quick look at how I made it:

Start by cutting a piece of cardstock to 11" x 5.5" and fold in half. With the card folded, align the peak of the House Pivot Card die on the fold as shown, and cut.

Open the card and reverse the house fold so that it's coming toward you. Trim off the peak of the house. Cut another house using the same technique. Trim it from the card, keeping the outer two pickets to use as tabs. Add adhesive to the tabs and attach to the back side of the house, creating a box.

Add supports to adhere pop-up elements, as shown. I ended up changing my card colors to what you see above. After cutting the house from pink cardstock, I cut the house out two more times from white and cut the fence and house away from the card, then adhered it over the pink fence and box.

I used the poles from the Lots of Pops die set as feet, and the barn door trim from the new Barn die to dress up my planter. Along the bottom I added a border cut using the grass die from the Outdoor Edges die set. To fill the box, I fussy cut a lot of flowers and leaves from Graphic 45's Botanical Tea papers. Finally, I added tiny blue flowers that were cut using the flower die from the All Seasons Tree die set.

How pretty is that?! Now that I've made a garden planter, I am excited to try other things in a box! :)

Thanks so much for stopping by today. Special thanks for Raquel Mason for inspiring the alternate house die cutting technique, and Donna Wright for inspiring me to use the barn door trim in a very unique way!

Eat More Cake!

Hi all! I came across this card on Pinterest that was pinned from a store's site and realized I'd never shared it on my blog! Sometimes there are so many samples that it's hard to keep track of what I've posted and what I haven't.

When I saw this set, I had no idea how insanely popular it was going be! It's such a departure from Tim's usual style that it took me awhile to figure out what to do with it. However, my deadline was crazy tight so I didn't have time to mull it over long. Thankfully, I came across a piece of cardstock that I'd used to experiment with Wendy Vecchi's Archival reinker technique (see the video HERE) and thought it was perfect.

I also had a bunch of Tim's new stencils to play with, so I used the Tiles pattern to add more texture with a Picket Fence dabber. I used the happy birthday sentiment from the Simple Sayings set and repeatedly stamped it on the background. After that, I added my bird with his little hat and stamped the perfect sentiment. So cute!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed my crazy bird! I still have more of my samples to share - I guess I need to get busy and post them! :)

12 Tags of 2015 - Coffee Lovers, Unite!

Hi all! I have to tell you, I was so excited when I saw this month's tag from Tim Holtz. Not only is the plaid technique seriously cool, but he used a die I've been itching to try a technique on. Above is my card in the closed position. When it opens...

Ta da! The lid lifts off to reveal a gift card to your favorite coffee shop! How awesome is that?? Of course, anything this amazing has to come from the mind of Karen Burniston. While watching her video on how to make Rocky the Crab doff his cap, I immediately thought of all the other things that could lift off. Tim Holtz's coffee cup was the perfect die for an idea I had brewing...

Here's a quick look at how I made it. For Karen's full tutorial, see the video at the bottom of this post.

Begin by cutting a piece of manila cardstock (and you definitely want it to be Ranger's manila cs because it is extra sturdy and won't warp when inked) to 5.5" x 7.25". This will result in an A2-sized card. Score it in the center and add a piece of green Kraft Core'dinations to the right side. Flip the card over and cut using Karen Burniston's Rectangle Pull card, nesting the smaller rectangle die in the center to create a frame.

Fold the card as shown. By adding the green cardstock, you create a contrasting frame when the card is closed. I initially had a clear plastic frame in the window, but the cup ended up being too bulky so I removed it. Create your coffee cup according to Tim's tutorial.

Ink your stencil. Since I didn't have the new ink pad that Tim used, I substituted Distress Minis and they worked great!

Open the card and create the plaid pattern. I love this look!!

While stamping the plaid, also stamp a small scrap of manila - the waste from the rectangle frame works perfectly. Cut the swivel mechanism (included in the Rectangle Pull Card set) from the scrap and adhere it as shown. Determine where your cup will go and then add a slit in the card behind the top of the cup to slide a gift card into. Adhere the cup, along with a straw. I didn't have a green straw, so I used my Spectrum Noir markers to color a clear one. Next, attach the lid to the spinner and you're set!

Nothing beats a video when trying to show the dimension and action of a Pop it Ups card! How fun is that lid lifting off? I'm sure your mind is racing with all the other things that can pop up!

A coffee-themed card deserves some coordinating gifts, right? For my son's birthday, we gave him a French press and a few other gifts to go with it - I've been waiting for the perfect time to share the pics! Tim's Freshly Brewed Blueprint stamps plus kraft paper from the dollar store makes such cute wrapping paper!

The Dollar Tree just happened to have the perfect colored twine too. Starbucks green! :)

Watch Karen's video to get detailed instructions on how to achieve this pop-up action. I know you're going to want to try this! She also has another adorable card using this technique HERE.
